I am a freelance photographer/photojournalist based in Ottawa, Canada
providing editorial, stock, fine art, portrait and commercial photography.
I now spend some of the summer months in Hillgrade Newfoundland and take assignments
while there.
A Kodak Brownie box camera and 620 film got me started, followed by a
move to a Kodak Instamatic 124 and, courtesy of a paper route, a Pentax
Spotmatic SPII with 135mm telephoto lens.
A degree in electrical engineering led to a job and a Canon A-1 which
served me well until I decided in 2001 that I probably should have been
a photographer all along. Round about that time, with the help of eBay,
photography moved from pastime to passion.
I am a graduate of the Loyalist College Photojournalism program. I truly enjoy
telling a story with pictures and documenting life.
Working with digital equipment I am able to shoot, process in
the field and transmit photos to clients.
I began shooting for more artistic purposes.
There is beauty in everyday things that many of us just don't see. I
want to capture this beauty to feed my own soul and to share it with others.
My favourite time of the day is early morning - calm, peaceful with
exquisite soft light. Dew is a bonus, revealing things that might
normally be missed. It is positively magical.
A shadow, a reflection, contrast, line, shape - all form the basis for
interesting and beautiful images. I'm like a kitten chasing a laser pointer -
constantly scanning the landscape for that combination of elements that
will become a photograph. Excited when I find it. Not content until I
capture it.
I am constantly reminded that there are many ways of looking at things,
and not only through the lens.
When shooting people, my goal is to reflect the spark that makes them
who they are. A good image is one where the photographer and the subject
have connected even for a brief moment. The best photographs happen when
I capture that moment.
